Irancy, the picturesque

Located 15 km from Auxerre, Irancy is one of the most typical villages of the Auxerre vineyards. Installed at the end of the valley, bordered with hillsides covered with vineyards and cherry trees, its narrow streets and vineyard houses exude an authentic charm and a strong personality.

A wine of character

The Irancy vineyard covers 315 hectares 780 acres of which almost 200 (500 acres) are currently in production. They produce a red wine made from the Pinot Noir grape variety, which can also contain a touch of Caesar, a local grape variety. IRANCY obtained the AOC appellation in 1999 and became the first red wine produced in the Yonne to obtain the prestigious village appellation.
On tasting, Irancy is deep purple, approaching garnet in colour, and with a pronounced fruity bouquet (blackcurrant, sour cherry, raspberry, blackberry) sometimes punctuated with floral or spicy aromas.

Irancy wines can be drunk as young as three or four years of age, but their great ageing potential can let them blossom for up to 10 or even 20 years, depending on the vintage.

The Irancy vineyard is composed of many “climats” (or specific areas of the vineyard), each having its own marked personality. Among the most famous are: Palotte, Les Mazelots, Le Paradis, Veaupessiot …

The village of Soufflot

Jacques-Germain Soufflot was born in 1713 in Irancy, the architect of many monuments of French heritage, including the Pantheon in Paris, Place Royale in Reims and Hotel Dieu in Lyon.The main street of the village bears his name.
